As rough as pumice and as tough as a gladiatorial robot, McDonald Heard looks like Ernest Hemingways idea of an architect. Hes a hard-drinking, rough-edged gambler, an outdoorsman with the largest collection of horribly abused hats youve ever seen. His wifes been jailed more than once after bailing him out of a bar fight or a duel or an argument about an amphicopter mooring. McDonalds hands betray a hands-on life of true toil and trouble. Hes the bad boy of living home building.

And "building" is the right word. Like Beate Bosch, McDonald Heard is as much a material artisan as he is a draftsman or conceptualist. No stage of a Heard project progresses without McDonald first wading in with an old hammer, mallet, torch, or saw. He prefers to grab hold of his work, to touch the soul of his homes innermost fibers. Heard likes the marrow. Even among old schoolers, hes the old man
yet hes only fifty-five!
McDonald Heard Architects construct living homes all over the world. They are based in unlikely locales like Kampala in Uganda, Irkutsk in Siberia, Cuzco in Peru, and Carrick in Ireland, but their clients find them nonetheless. In fact, they would probably hunt them down. Heard and company build very unique and "moving" residences, especially waterborne houses and mobile homes. McDonalds clan is fond of portable art.
Portability, recyclability, and self-sufficiency are hallmarks of McDonald Heard Architects. Heard Homes are self-contained environments. They have shellswhich MHA always call "hulls"and roofs, but all the other parts are joined with detachable fastenings. You can always take part of a Heard home for a spin. And while they incorporate all of the most modern features and appliances, they are modest in size and operate within a sparing scheme that wastes virtually nothing. A river-based home will draw its energy from the sky and the movement of the water, just as one by the beach taps the tides, or a road-based unit captures the wind (even while in transit).
Naturally, Heard AIs are restless souls. Theyre the vagabonds of sentient residency. Some are reclamation projects, AIs originally designed and then abandoned by other sentient property makers. Many Heard clients trade them from time to time, particularly in cases where the structure has become rooted for a time. This way they avoid outright abandonment; for the main trouble with McDonalds work is that some of his AIs simply flee the household, hitching rides with visiting ships or amphicopters or simply disappearing into the ether of the untamed com-net. On the up side, though, they are undoubtedly the most interesting AIs youll encounter in a home. Worldly and experienced, they put a wholly different spin on the idea of household companion.
McDonald Heard Architect's business is organized around three programs. First, they build houseboats, everything from modest "shotguns" to floating mansions. Second, they create "road homes," mobile homes and chambers of every variety that can be combined to form rambling palaces. Third, they create biodegradable or recyclable "disposable" homes. Not surprisingly, much of their income comes from military and industrial contracts.

Chickahominy Jane is this months example of a McDonald Heard design. Shes a canal-oriented houseboat capable of navigating rivers and calmer coastal seas. Crafted of resin-infused heart pine, calked with plastic amber, and bound with composite ready cleats, she is as solid and flexible as a ship can be; yet she remains more a home than a boat.

Aside from her solar-fluid fueled electric power plant, she is akin to an open design garden house. Her broad portals and glass decks flood the home with sunlight, all the while capturing energy and circulating fluids. Janes interior furnishingseverything from pots to wallsplug into the structure using Heards patented "uni-lock" construction. Every visit is a trip into a new variation on a splendidly creative theme.
Chickahominy Jane is a friendly, flighty AI that belies an inner toughness rooted in a sometimes troubled past. Originally designed to run a casino in Reno, the Palomino, she has lived in Nevada, Costa Rica, Minot, North Dakota, and at the Asialand themepark in Mindanao. There is little that she hasnt seen or cannot do; and her owners, Barrett and Hanah Ruberry, appreciate her richly imbued tales. No AI is a better entertainer. Using chambers in the hull, typical household furniture, and odd pots and pans, she even creates her own music.
Jane is also a talented problem solver, and does an admirable job tending everything from the homes grasshouse gardens to the sophisticated chart room. Jane fishes. Jane predicts the weather and dares the currents. Chickahominy Jane is a lot like her friend and adopted father, McDonald Heard.
