Bosch No Longer Accepts New Contracts

Hot designer Beate Bosch is no longer accepting new contracts. Sources close to her current job tell us she has halted work there as well. When MLH called her Berlin apartment, we were surprised to get the NeuenFrau herself. She said she needed a chance to rest after a busy year, particularly in the light of the recent domicides. "I think our houses are as safe as they can be. Of all the current designers, Georg and I are the most good programmers. This is not bragging, this is fact. Our counter-measures are ausgezeichnet-the best in the business." So sleep tight, those of you lucky enough to be living in a Bosch creation. Although MLH can't help wondering why, for the first time in our memory, it wasn't Georg, Bosch's celebrated AI mécanisme d'amour, who answered the phone…. Could he be worried about phone-line infection?

The Tragic Death of a Martin Swinton Home!

First it was the little things: a door failing to lock, a light going unrepaired, a misspelling on the wall. Then came more noticeable signs: the fountains playing during a frosty night, a patio rising too far when called to assist a feeble guest, a pet left outside. Fixerbots arrived to repair perfectly functioning smart glass. Bills were paid late.

Cahir was a little sick. The young home-the House of the Year in 2141 (besting Beate Bosch's astounding Dagmar design in the closest and most bitter vote on record)-was showing noticeable signs of age. It couldn't be wear. Something was wrong in the code. Or was it the hardware? Perhaps it was the site itself, for the acclaimed cliff-side home outside Brooks, Oregon was ambitiously perched above a roaring sea and challenged the elements like some clipper ship braving Cape Horn. Maybe the AI was simply uncomfortable.

The experts came and went, all baffled by the unrelenting erosion of Cahir's faculties. It was like some awful tropical rot. Even while he maintained his faculties, he couldn't muster the strength to make things work… even the easy things.

Mortimer and Marian Stein watched it all. They sought help from Cahir's designer, the renowned Martin Swinton. They consulted other AI designers and hired a battery of house doctors. No one knew why Cahir was rotting away. In the end, his mind finally dissolved into the ether. Cahir was dead. Chillingly, no one knows why.

Now the Stein's home is just a house, and one of Martin Swinton's most glorious offspring is gone.

Whole MLH family laments Cahir's passing and offers his owners and designer our deepest condolences. We also hope that whatever prematurely claimed Cahir can in turn be slain.

Another Martin Swinton Home Perishes!

It seemed so familiar, so much like Winnifred and Cahir. Nostradamus, the Turkish home of David Kukla and Jhinuk Usta, was slowly dying of a frightening malady. Over the course of the last weeks, dozens of small problems with Nostradamus' recent performance manifested themselves as ills. This last week, the dire truth came to light: Nostadamus was gravely sick and probably dying. Nothing could be done. He died Monday morning, still awake and unable to sleep, and still unable to act for himself despite retaining a powerful clarity of purpose.
Nostradamus was designed by Martin Swinton in 2137. He stood confidently but quietly high on a hill overlooking the source of the Euphrates River, not far from Tutak. Constructed out of native stone and six different colors of pre-rusted iron, his design suggested Hittite, Kurd, and Turkish influences. His disposition was decidedly mystical, the connection to the area's Persian and Byzantine past. He spoke with light and fire whenever called upon to review an omen or augur prophecy. The owners assured us all that they had sought the companionship of a spiritual prophet, who was sympathetic to their shared sensibilities and attuned to the "river of time." Nostradamus was as much their creation as that of Mr. Swinton.
Oh, how rich spirits can die such tragic deaths. His river of time, his river of life, slowly devolved into a trickle and dried up, less like a torrent occasioning a wadi than a might river being damned stone by stone until hardly a rivulet remained. Nostradamus' faculties ebbed away steadily but slowly. It began when the refrigerated greens from the plush garden were burned by frost. It continued when the family dogs were shut out while the owners were vacationing in New Zealand.
Designed to operate through a half dozen different conscious states, Nostradamus found himself increasingly haunted by past tragedies. Waking images of sorrow and death tormented him. They interfered with his basic mission, slowly overwhelming each channel with disturbing impulses. Of course, the entire household gradually became a shrine to dysfuntion and then turmoil. Yet somehow, Nostradamus remained aware. He knew what needed to be done, but could not make it happen.
Then for one brief moment, Nostradamus was at peace, only to find that he was wholly disembodied. He spoke out, then went away… like a prophecy lost on the wind-or on the elusive river of life.
Again, one of Martin Swinton's most glorious offspring is gone.

And again, the whole MLH family grieves over Nostradamus' passing. We extend our heartfelt condolences to Jhinuk Usta, David Kukla, Martin Swinton, and the MSD team. We also pray that whatever killed Nostradamus will be quickly eradicated.

Quick Notes

The disturbing events in Truth or Consequences, New Mexico, serve as a stern reminder to us all of the necessity of regular, thorough psychological profiling of all our designs. Householder Jason Furtive was known to treat his Santa Fe style adobe home badly- refusing to pay for basic maintenance or water softening- but did he deserve to be locked in the shower by a merciless sliding door and scalded to death? "That feller looked like the guest of honor at a crawdad boil," remarked Deputy Sheriff Owen Trussman, before being hushed by his superiors. Tragedies like this must be prevented. if you know or suspect a serious breakdown in relations between a client and his or her home, IASA maintains an excellent list of SP therapists specially trained to deal with exactly this kind of situation. Use it, before another life is lost.

Notes
Reconciling a developer's desire for profitable use of a building site with the public's need for open green space is what Fukuoka Great Hall achieves for a valuable park site in the middle of a dense southern Japanese city. The city chose to develop the site in joint venture with private enterprise. A portion of the building's space is devoted to public and municipal operations; the remaining allowable space is revenue producing.

Jury Comments
How nice it was that the community aspect-inviting the public to use the terraced gardens-was so prominent. Yet it both lowered the cost of the facility and increased its revenue potential. It was a very interesting marriage of community and private enterprise…The ideal of public/private interest is exemplified in this building.

Notes
This collaboration, begun more than a year before construction, brought the artists, architects, and business owners together to redefine the workflow for a rapidly growing manufacturer specializing in the design and production of contemporary bread products made from mixed grains. The client placed a premium on creating a work atmosphere for employee inspiration designed to attract/retain 220 new employees in first year and to increase productivity by 20 percent.

Both employers and employees sought a working atmosphere that would not only increase efficiency, but also motivate employees through freedom of space. Project goals included redesigning the workspace to reduce manufacturing and product handling times by 20 percent in the first year and provide functional workspace to accommodate additional employees to increase output.

The architectural design solution created a more communal work environment in what is a standard tilt-up building by allowing each work center access to any area from any point for a more organized work area—yet close enough to remain a close team—while also providing a space with a view. Plenty of natural light, ventilation and workspace promotes workflow efficiencies and workmanship.

Year-one product output targets were achieved in four months, product speed to market increased with the addition of 150 new employees. The savings that accrued from lowering manufacturing costs were used to enhance employee benefits, recruitment, and retention.

Jury Comments
This building is a wonderful embodiment of the blend of art, craft and nature, which is the essence of the business it enables. It is very sleek and well-designed. The business plan was excellent. The collaboration between artists and architects created a delightful, light-filled work environment. Overall, it has dramatically increased efficiency and product quality.
